Professor Heather Angus-Leppan

Professor Heather Angus-Leppan is a Consultant Neurologist and Epilepsy Lead at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. She is Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical and Movement Neurosciences, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology London, and National Lead for Stratified Medicine for Neurology for the Clinical Research Network. She is a member of the Epilepsy Advisory Group for the Association of British Neurologists, past President of Clinical Neurosciences Section, Royal Society of Medicine and past Honorary Secretary of the Association of British Neurologists. She trained in Sydney, Oxford and Cardiff, and has worked in the England, Wales, Australia, South Africa and Chile. Her research interests are general neurology, epilepsy and migraine.

Professor Angus-Leppan reports attendance at Advisory board MHRA meeting and Sanofi Women and Epilepsy Education Board 2018. She has also received honoraria for non-pharmaceutical educational talks, as well as Eisai (non-pharmacological) and UCB investigator-initiated research grants.

Professor Selim R. Benbadis, MD

Professor of Neurology University of South Florida

Dr. Benbadis is currently Professor of Neurology at the University of South Florida. He is Director of the University of South Florida /Tampa General Hospital Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, the busiest surgical epilepsy center in Florida with >50 resections per year. His interests are in the diagnosis and management of seizures that are difficult to control, and the misdiagnosis of epilepsy. He has authored over 300 articles and book chapters. He also has a strong interest in medical writing and editing, and serves on several Editorial Boards. Finally, he has a strong interest in Education, serves as Faculty on numerous courses each year, and has received several teaching awards. Dr. Benbadis is a competitive tennis player, plays the “senior” circuit (60s), and is currently ranked top 3 in Florida and top 10 Nationally.

Professor Martin Brodie

International Bureau for Epilepsy and Scottish Epilepsy Initiative, UK

Professor Martin Brodie has directed the Epilepsy Unit in Glasgow, Scotland since 1981. He has published more than 500 editorials, chapters, reviews, and scientific papers. He was secretary and then chair of the Commission on European Affairs (CEA) of the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) from 1993 until 2001. He was vice president and treasurer from 2001 until 2009. He set up the charity Scottish Epilepsy Initiative in 2003. Professor Brodie has received the European Epileptology Award from the CEA, the epilepsy Lifetime Service Award from its UK chapter, the William G Lennox Award from the American Epilepsy Society and the Epilepsy Lifetime Accelerator Award from the Epilepsy Foundation. He is the current president of the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE).

Professor Roberto Caraballo

Roberto Caraballo is currently Chair of the Department of Neurology at the Pediatric Hospital J.P. Garrahan in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Caraballo has published more than 120 peer-reviewed articles and 46 book chapters and is co-author of 6 books contributing to the knowledge on and recognition of many different epileptic syndromes. He has also participated in consensus groups on the ketogenic diet, electroclinical definition and therapeutic management of epileptic encephalopathies, and global management of refractory epilepsy such as Rasmussen encephalitis, mesial temporal lobe epilepsy secondary to hippocampal sclerosis, and focal cortical dysplasia. Dr. Caraballo worked for the Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO) as an advisor on epilepsy in 1999 and as a local investigator in Argentina for International Program “Epilepsy out of the Shadows”, of the WHO-PAHO, ILAE, and IBE between 2001 and 2003. He was a member of different commissions of the ILAE and currently participates in the EpilepsyDiagnosis.Org & Syndromes and Telemedicine Task Forces. He has been a member of the editorial board of Epilepsia since 2010. Currently, Dr. Caraballo is Chair of the Executive Board of ILAE-Latin America and he is Vice-President elect of the ILAE for the term 2021-2025.

Professor Helen Cross

Professor Helen Cross is The Prince of Wales's Chair of Childhood Epilepsy and Head of the Developmental Neuroscience Research and Teaching Department at UCL- Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Neurology Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust, London and Young Epilepsy, Lingfield, UK. Her research has been targeted at improving outcomes in early onset epilepsy, specifically in assessing the role of surgery and ketogenic diet. She has held key leadership roles both nationally and internationally. She is currently Treasurer of the International League Against Epilepsy 2017-2021 (President elect 2021-2025), Clinical Advisor to the National Children's Epilepsy Surgery Service, and Clinical Advisor to the update of the NICE guidelines for Childhood Epilepsy 2018-2021. She developed, as Coordinator, the European Reference Network for Rare and Complex Epilepsies (EpiCARE) launched in 2017. She received an ILAE Ambassador for Epilepsy award in 2007 and is a recipient of the American Academy of Neurology Sydney Carter Award, The International Child Neurology Association Frank Ford Award and the American Epilepsy Clinical Research Award. She received an OBE for contributions to childhood epilepsy in 2015.

Professor Orrin Devinsky

Orrin Devinsky, M.D. is the Director of the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and the Saint Barnabas Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (INN). He is also a Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry at NYU Langone School of Medicine. Professor Devinsky specializes in epilepsy and behavioural neurology.

Professor Anita Devlin

Dr Anita Devlin is a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at Newcastle's Great North Children's Hospital and Associate Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University. She is the regional lead for paediatric epilepsy and offers clinics for the diagnosis and management of complex epilepsy in childhood including vagal nerve stimulator and ketogenic diet clinics. She is a founder member of faculty for the national and international Paediatric Epilepsy Training (PET) courses, co-directing the launches in South Africa and New Zealand. In collaboration with Matthew's Friends charity and colleagues Dr Devlin developed, launched and regularly mentors at “KetoCollege” an international multidisciplinary course on Ketogenic dietary therapies. She is research active in the field of paediatric epilepsy, publishing and peer reviewing articles and receives invitations to speak nationally and internationally.

Dr Devlin graduated from University College London Medical School in 1988 and trained in Oxford, Southampton, Aberdeen, London and Newcastle in Paediatrics and then Paediatric Neurology. She was awarded a higher doctorate (MD) for research in 2001.

Professor Robert Fisher

Dr. Fisher is Maslah Saul MD Professor and Director of the Stanford Epilepsy Center. He had research awards from the Klingenstein Foundation, EF, CURE and NIH. He published 160 peer-reviewed articles and 4 books. He was named 1996-2020 in Best Doctors in America. He received the Ambassador Award from the International League Against Epilepsy, the 2005 AES Service Award and the 2006 Annual Clinical Research Award. Dr. Fisher is Past-President of the American Epilepsy Society, and has served on the Board of the ILAE and of the American Clinical Neurophysiology (EEG) Society and as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal, Epilepsia. He is past Editor-in-Chief of the website epilepsy.com. His research is on new devices to treat epilepsy.

Professor Trish Greenhalgh

Trish Greenhalgh is an internationally recognised academic in primary health care and trained as a GP. As co-Director of the Interdisciplinary Research In Health Sciences (IRIHS) unit, Trish leads a programme of research at the interface between social sciences and medicine, with strong emphasis on the organisation and delivery of health services. Her research seeks to celebrate and retain the traditional and humanistic aspects of medicine while also embracing the exceptional opportunities of contemporary science and technology to improve health outcomes and relieve suffering.

Her past research has covered the evaluation and improvement of clinical services at the primary-secondary care interface, particularly the use of narrative methods to illuminate the illness experience in ‘hard to reach' groups; the challenges of implementing evidence-based practice (including the study of knowledge translation and research impact); the adoption and use of new technologies (including electronic patient records and assisted living technologies) by both clinicians and patients; and the application of philosophy to clinical practice.

She has brought this interdisciplinary perspective to bear on the research response to the Covid-19 pandemic, looking at diverse themes including clinical assessment of the deteriorating patient by phone and video, the science and anthropology of face coverings, and policy decision-making in conditions of uncertainty.

Professor Jane Hanna

Jane Hanna is the founder and CEO of SUDEP Action, an organisation which specialises in epilepsy and risk and supports the family and friends of those bereaved through epilepsy. She is a global advocate and expert on sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. In 2010, Jane was awarded an OBE, and in 2013, a Social Accomplishment Award in recognition of her work to highlight the under-recognised problem of epilepsy deaths. Jane is also an Oxfordshire County Councillor with special interests in health and childrens services. She is a Former Law Fellow and Lecturer at Oxford University, and a Barrister.

Professor Reetta Kälviäinen

Reetta Kälviäinen is the Full Professor and Chair of Neurology in the University of Eastern Finland and the Director of the Kuopio Epilepsy Center in the Kuopio University Hospital. Her special research interest is clinical epileptology including identifying biomarkers of seizure activity, epileptogenesis, progression, and drug-resistancy in cohorts of newly diagnosed and drug-resistant chronic patients. These aspects of scientific projects are combined with therapeutic neuropharmacological interventions. She serves in the steering group of the European Reference Network for rare and complex epilepsies EpiCARE (of which Kuopio Epilepsy Center is a member) and in the management group of the Epilepsy Scientific Panel of the European Academy of Neurology. She is the chair of the board of the Neurocenter Finland.

Professor Troels Kjaer

Troels Kjaer is a licensed physician working in university hospital setting and as a professor of University of Copenhagen. He earned his PhD in brain signal analysis and has research interests in medical devices, epilepsy, consciousness and functional brain analysis (PET, MRI, EEG, neuropsychology). His clinical interests include clinical neurophysiology and neurology. Troels teaches Danish and International pre-med and medical students as well as PhD-students.

Dr Günter Krämer

Günter Kramer (*1952 in Germany) studied psychology (up until his pre-diploma examination) and medicine at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Germany). After his licensure (1977), he completed his specialist training and doctorate at the university's hospital. From 1982 to 1994 he was senior physician at the Department of Neurology at University Medical Center Mainz, where he also focused on epilepsy in his work. From 1994 to mid-2013, he was senior consultant and Medical Director of the Swiss Epilepsy Center (EPI) in Zurich. Since 2013 he is part time-working at the NeuroCentre Bellevue.

Dr. Krämer is a member of Swiss, German and American professional epilepsy societies. He has been President of the Swiss League Against Epilepsy from 2001 to 2016 and has a seat on numerous national and international expert committees. From 2009 to 2013, for example, he was a member of the treatment committee of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and was appointed to its Educational Commission from 2013 to 2017. In 2003, he received the Ambassador for Epilepsy Award from the ILAE.

He is the author/co-author and publisher/co-editor of numerous textbooks and specialist journals as well as book and magazine articles. In addition to publishing for specialists in the field, he has also published books for people with epilepsy and their relatives.

Professor John Paul Leach

After qualifying in medicine from Glasgow, JP had several training posts in his native city, culminating in his MD thesis in 1997 on the pharmacology and mechanisms of action of the new antiepileptic drugs.

He had a six-year spell in Liverpool's Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery training in neurology and clinical neurophysiology. He has been a consultant in Glasgow since 2002, his clinical workload covering established and newly diagnosed epilepsy as well as patients presenting with a first seizure. He has written one textbook and several book chapters including being lead author for the Neurology chapter in Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine.

He is Head of Undergraduate Medicine at Glasgow and a past President of the UK Chapter of the International League Against Epilepsy

Dr Tejal Mitchell

Dr Tejal Mitchell completed medical and neurological training in London, and gained specialist training in epilepsy and EEG in Australia. She completed a PhD at the Epilepsy Unit at the Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, looking at different MRI techniques in brain development and epilepsy.

Dr Mitchell is currently a Consultant Neurologist at Peterborough City Hospital with additional expertise in the management of patients with seizure disorders and epilepsy at Addenbrookes Hospital. She cares for patients in the Epilepsy Clinic and inpatients on the video EEG telemetry unit. In addition, she runs a biennial course on EEG and seizure semiology, and was the Training Programme Director from Neurology in East of England from 2012-2018.

Kim Morley

Kim is a registered midwife, registered nurse, independent nurse prescriber and advanced clinical practitioner. She specializes in antiepileptic drug prescribing management & all aspects of epilepsy. She conducts a unique service alongside her obstetric colleagues, personalising holistic care and treatment support from transition, the preconception years and motherhood. In addition, she conducts the epilepsy specialist nurse service for HHFT (Winchester) & volunteers as an assessor for MBRRACE; expert contributor to Epilepsy Action, SUDEP Action & CareEpilepsy; represents the RCM on the valproate committee (MHRA) & reviews professional journal articles.

Professor Ley Sander

Ley Sander is Professor of Neurology and Clinical Epilepsy and Honorary Consultant Neurologist with a specialist interest in epilepsy. In this role, he has approximately 1,200 people with epilepsy under his neurological care. He the head of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and the Medical Director of the Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy in Buckinghamshire. Ley Sander is also the Scientific Director of SEIN, the Epilepsy Institutes of the Netherlands Foundation, in Heemstede, the Netherlands. He qualified in Medicine at the University of Parana in Curitiba, Brazil and then completed his specialist training in Neurology at St Thomas Hospital and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. He obtained his PhD in Clinical Neurosciences at the University of London and is an elected fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

Professor Bettina Schmitz

Bettina Schmitz is head of the Department of Neurology and Center for Epilepsy at the Vivantes-Humboldt-Klinikum in Berlin. She holds a professorship in Neurology at the Charité, Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany.

She qualified in medicine from the Free University in Berlin in 1986 and worked as a research fellow at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London, before returning to Berlin in 1992 to take up a post as registrar at the Department of Psychiatry at the Free University. She qualified in psychiatry and neurology. She completed her MD in 1989, her PhD in 1997. She became Professor in Neurology in 2005.

Professor Schmitz's research focus is on the field of epileptology. Her current research interests include teratogenetic effects of anticonvulsants, women's issues, genetics of epilepsy and neuropsychiatric aspects of epilepsy. She was head of the ILAE Commission on psychobiology of epilepsy until 2005; she was a member of several international commissions including the Commission on European Affairs and the Commission on Education. She served on the board of the German chapter of the ILAE, and she is the chair of the board of trustees of the Michael Foundation. She has been a member of several editorial boards, including Epilepsy and Behaviour and has been an editor of Epilepsia. She has published extensively in international journals, mainly in the field of epilepsy, and she produced several textbooks on epilepsy. She has been involved in about 50 clinical studies phase 2, 3 and 4 particularly related to epilepsy both as principal and co-investigator.

Professor Rohit Shankar

Rohit Shankar is a Professor of Neuropsychiatry at the University of Plymouth Medical School and Director of it's Cornwall Intellectual Disability Equitable Research (CIDER) unit. Awarded an MBE (2018) for services to the learning disability community he has national/international awards including the BMJ awards for Mental Health (2020), Education (2019), Neurology (2016), Innovation (highly commended-2017), ILAE Epileptic Disorders best paper (2017) and Epilepsy Foundation America SUDEP Challenge (2016). He has over 150 index-linked publications/ book-chapters and led/contributed to various national reports. Rohit is a Consultant in developmental Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Director at Cornwall Partnership NHS FT, Associate Professor (Hon.) at University of Exeter Medical School, Hon. Fellow Falmouth University (2019 –current) and chair of the SW RCPsych division. His interests are in co-producing translational clinical research in neurodevelopmental/neuropsychiatric disorders, clinical risk management, and use of implementation science for health technology.

Professor Michael Sperling

Professor Sperling is the Baldwin Keyes Professor of Neurology and Vice Chairman for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Neurology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He is the Director of the Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He has been published widely in both international and national medical journals including Epilepsia, Neurology, Journal of the American Medical Association, and Annals of Neurology, with more than 200 original papers, reviews, and book chapters, and over 200 abstracts.

He has also published an EEG atlas and a textbook on the pharmacologic management of epilepsy. He has received grants from the National Institutes of Health and private industry for research in epilepsy, with a focus on the surgical treatment of epilepsy, mortality in epilepsy, epilepsy genetics, and clinical neurophysiology. He lectures at many international and national meetings and has organized numerous conferences.

Professor Sperling is an active member of many professional organizations including the American Epilepsy Society, American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, and the American Academy of Neurology, and is past-President of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society and the Philadelphia Neurological Society. Professor Sperling is also editor of Epilepsia and is a reviewer for numerous medical journals.

Professor Shakila Thangaratinam

Shakila Thangaratinam is a professor of maternal and perinatal health at University of Birmingham. As Consultant Obstetrician she is involved in the care of high-risk mothers at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor Thangaratinam has established a strong portfolio of research in maternal and perinatal health. Her work focuses on prediction, prevention and treatment of complications in mothers with pre-eclampsia, epilepsy, diabetes, and obesity. Her publications include papers in high-impact journals such as the Lancet and the BMJ. She leads the International Weight Management in Pregnancy (i-WIP) collaborative group (40 researchers, 16 countries), with the largest live repository of individual data of over 30,000 participants (BMJ 2017). The findings of this work informed the UK Chief Medical Officers' recommendations on physical activity in pregnancy. She leads the prediction of pre-eclampsia IPPIC (International Prediction of Complications in Pregnancy) collaborative network (73 collaborators, 21 countries), one of the largest global repositories of standardised Individual Participant Data (IPD) of over five million pregnancies. She has published in first or last author position in Lancet, Lancet Global Health, HTA monographs.

Professor Torbjörn Tomson

Torbjörn Tomson is Professor of Neurology and Epileptology at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden and head of the Epilepsy Section at the Department of Neurology at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.

Dr Tomson received his medical and neurology training at Karolinska Institutet where he gained his MD in 1974 and his PhD in 1983. He became Professor of Neurology in 2002 and Professor of Neurology and Epileptology in 2010 at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet.

Starting with studies of clinical pharmacology of antiepileptic drugs his research interest has developed to involve also epidemiological approaches with the overall aim to reduce risks in epilepsy and in association with its treatment. In the last decades his research has focused on two main areas: pregnancy outcomes in women with epilepsy and mortality in epilepsy, in particularly SUDEP. He was one of the initiators of EURAP, the international antiepileptic drugs and pregnancy registry, a collaboration between more than 40 countries, which he is currently leading. He has been engaged in national and international collaborative studies aiming at identifying risk factors for SUDEP as well improving our understanding of SUDEP mechanisms.

Dr Tomson has authored more than 200 papers related to epilepsy. He was awarded Ambassador of Epilepsy in 1999, the Golden Candle Award from the Swedish Epilepsy Association in 2011, the AES Research Recognition Award for Clinical Science in 2013, and is Honorary Professor of Hanoi Medical University since 2011.

Professor Eugen Trinka, MD, MSc, FRCP

Dr. Eugen Trinka is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology, Christian Doppler University Hospital at the Paracelsus Medical University, Salzburg, Austria. He is also Vice Director of the Christian Doppler University Hospital.

He qualified in Medicine at Vienna University in 1990. Dr Trinka pursued fellowship training at the Montreal Neurological Institute 1998/1999. From 2003 to 2010 he has been Associate Professor of Neurology at the Innsbruck Medical University and Head of the Epilepsy Service and EEG Laboratory at the Department of Neurology, University Hospital Innsbruck. He was appointed as Chair of the Department of Neurology, Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg in 2010.

His research interests include clinical epileptology with a focus on epidemiology, prognosis, epilepsy surgery, and status epilepticus, as well as clinical neurophysiology and functional neuroimaging. He received several scientific awards including the Herbert Reisner Preis for clinical epileptology, and the Humes Visting Professorship Award of the Cornell Weill University New York. Professor Trinka is Past President of the Austrian Society of Neurology, and the Austrian Society for Epilepsy (Austrian ILAE Chapter), Austrian Society for Clinical Neurophysiology and the Society of Epilepsy Surgery Centres in Germany, Austria. In 2009 Dr. Trinka has been elected as an Executive member of the Commission on European Affairs of the International League Against Epilepsy (CEA-ILAE), where he served as the treasurer. He has been elected as Chair of ILAE-EUROPE in 2017. Dr. Trinka also serves on the ILAE Task force of Classification of Status Epilepticus, the Commission on Medical Treatment, the ILAE Working group on pre-clinical drug discovery, and the ILAE Task Force on Regulatory affairs.

Dr Vicente Villanueva

Dr Vicente Villanueva is a neurologist at the Neurology Service in Hospital La Fe, Valencia, where he became a staff member in 2004. Since 2005 he has also worked at the Multidisciplinary Epilepsy Unit at Hospital La Fe, where he is Head of the Refractory Epilepsy Unit and Epilepsy Surgery Programme. He serves as the representative of the European Reference Network Epi-CARE. He has been an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Valencia since 2017.

Dr Villanueva trained at the Fundación Jiménez Diaz, Madrid, Spain; the Epilepsy Center of the University of Alabama, Birmingham, USA; the Epilepsy Center of New York University, New York, USA, and Hôpital Saint-Vincent de Paul, Paris, France. He received his Ph.D. in the evaluation of video electroencephalography (EEG) in refractory epilepsy and is certified in epileptology by the European Epilepsy Academy. His current research interests include refractory epilepsy, video-EEG monitoring, epilepsy clinical trials, and epilepsy surgery.

Dr Villanueva is a member of the EEG board and the Epilepsy Guidelines Board of the Spanish Neurological Society. He is a reviewer for Neurology, Epilepsia, Epilepsy & Behaviour, Epilepsy Research, Acta Neurologica Scandinavica and European Journal of Paediatric Neurology. Recently, Professor Villanueva has directed nine epilepsy courses, authored 85 papers on epilepsy and has served as editor of three books on epilepsy. In 2014 Professor Villanueva was awarded with the Scientific Prize in epilepsy by the Spanish Neurological Society.

Professor Andrew McEvoy

Professor Andrew McEvoy is a world-leading consultant neurosurgeon at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), and Institute of Neurology (ION) in London.

He is the clinical lead for neuro-oncology and epilepsy surgery at NHNN. He has the largest adult epilepsy surgical practice in the UK and leads the surgical arm of the department of clinical and experimental epilepsy which is the renowned, preeminent epilepsy research group in Europe.

Professor McEvoy performs all surgical therapies for the management of epilepsy such as temporal lobe resections, hemispherotomy, corpus callosotomy, vagal nerve stimulation and gamma knife surgery. He has a number of ongoing research interests examining robotics in neurosurgery, developments in neuronavigation, the evaluation of functional deficit following epilepsy surgery, and imaging of the optic radiation to prevent visual field defects in temporal lobe surgery. Listed in The Times 2010 top UK doctors for his epilepsy and brain tumour surgery, Professor McEvoy's specialist neurooncology service has a particular interest in the prediction and preservation of function during large resective neurosurgical procedures and the reorganisation of brain function around brain tumours. This multidisciplinary approach integrates facilities such as 3T MRI, FMRI for language and motor function, DTI, MEG, neurophysiology and neuropsychology. Professor McEvoy is also the honorary consultant neurosurgeon to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

Professor Najib Kissani

Professor in Neurology is the Head of Neurology Department at the University Hospital Mohamed VI in Marrakech, Morocco. He is also the Head of Clinical and Experimental Research Laboratory of Marrakech Medical School. Dr. Kissani is also the past General Secretary of Moroccan League Against Epilepsy and is currently the President of the Moroccan Association against Epilepsy. Dr. Kissani is the Vice President of IBE (International Bureau of Epilepsy) in charge of East Mediterranean region. He is also Editor in Chief of Nameej (North African & Middle East Epilepsy Journal). Dr Kissani's main research subjects are epilepsy and sleep disorders.

Professor Michael Privitera

Michael Privitera, MD, Professor of Neurology and Director of the Epilepsy Center at the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute, is helping bring innovative treatments to epilepsy patients. Michael Privitera, MD, is the director of the Epilepsy Center at the University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute. He has been a neurologist at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for more than 25 years and a professor of neurology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine for 14 of those years.

Professor Privitera is an internationally recognized expert on advanced treatments for epilepsy and has dedicated his career to discovering new treatments and caring for people with epilepsy. He co-founded the Epilepsy Center over 25 years ago as the first comprehensive epilepsy program in the region. He has published over 100 scientific articles and a book on epilepsy and has directed over 50 clinical studies on epilepsy treatment.

In addition to his extensive medical experience, Professor Privitera was honoured with the Health Care Heroes Innovator Award in 2004 and as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in 2003. He was the editor of Epilepsy Quarterly for six years, has directed the two largest courses on epilepsy in the world at the American Epilepsy Society and American Academy of Neurology Annual Meetings, and trained more than 30 fellows in epilepsy and EEG.

Dr. Privitera has served multiple roles over the past 25 years including medical director and chair of clinical practice and research committees for UC Physicians, the administrative and clinical vice chair in the Department of Neurology at UC Health, and director of the clinical neurophysiology/epilepsy fellowship program.

Dr. Privitera gives back to the community in his roles as medical director of the Charles L. Shor Foundation for Epilepsy Research, a member of the board of directors for the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Cincinnati, and as the 2016 president of the American Epilepsy Society.

Professor Manuel Toledo

Professor Toledo is a neurologist affiliated to the Epilepsy Unit of Hospital Valle de Hebrón. He trained in Neurology at Valle de Hebrón Hospital (Barcelona) and Epileptology at the Rush Medical Center in Chicago. He is the clinical Associate Professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. He is also Secretary of the Epilepsy Group of the Spanish Society of Neurology, a member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Society of Epilepsy and a member of the board of directors of the Spanish chapter of the International Bureau Against Epilepsy.

Professor Esther Bui

Dr. Esther Bui is a Neurologist - Clinician Educator and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. She is cross-appointed to the Division of Obstetrical Medicine. She is the director of the University of Toronto's Epilepsy Fellowship and co-director of the Women's Neurology Fellowship, as well as co-director of Education, Krembil Brain Institute. Dr. Bui completed her M.D. in 2002 and Neurology residency in 2007, and Epilepsy and EEG fellowship in 2010 at the University of Toronto. She is a member of the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (CSCN) and served on the executive board of the CSCN 2012-2017 and is currently serving as on the executive of the Canadian League Against Epilepsy (CLAE). Her clinical and research interests lie in advancing the care of epilepsy, particularly focused on gender issues and pregnancy. In education, her interest is on teacher assessment tools and EEG learning.

Dr Sallie Baxendale

Dr Sallie Baxendale has worked on the epilepsy surgery programs at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery London since qualifying as a clinical psychologist in 1992. She is currently the Consultant Neuropsychologist on the epilepsy surgery program at the National Hospital for Neurology, Queen Square and has over 160 academic publications in epilepsy. Her research ranges from studies of the neural substrate of cognitive deficits in seizure disorders, to looking at ways in which the epilepsy is (mis) represented in the media and how the stigma associated with the condition can be reduced.

She serves on the editorial boards of three international journals and was elected to serve on the committee of UK ILAE Chapter in 2014. She chairs the ILAE Diagnostic Commission – Neuropsychology Task Force and is the Course Director for the Biannual ILAE Neuropsychology of Epilepsy Training Course. She is a longstanding faculty member of the European Project for the Development of Epilepsy Surgery Programs and coordinates the neuropsychological input for these courses. She regularly lectures in the UK and abroad and has been invited to speak in over 20 countries on neuropsychological aspects of epilepsy. In 2018 she was awarded the Arthur Benton Award by the International Neuropsychological Society in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the field of neuropsychology and was elected to the board of governors of the INS in 2020.

Dr Andres Miguel Kanner

Andres M. Kanner MD, FANA, FAAN, FAES, is professor of clinical neurology, head of the Epilepsy Section, and director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, which he joined on January 1, 2013. Prior to coming to Miami, he was director of the Laboratory of Electroencephalography and Video-EEG-Telemetry and associate director of the Epilepsy Section of the Rush Epilepsy Center. He was also professor of neurological sciences and psychiatry at Rush Medical College of Rush University in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Kanner was born in Mexico City, where he grew up and attended medical school at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. After graduating from medical school, he moved to the United States where he completed residency trainings in psychiatry and neurology, as well as a fellowship in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology. Dr. Kanner is quadruple-boarded in neurology, psychiatry, clinical neurophysiology, and epilepsy.

Dr. Kanner has long-standing research interests in the areas of pharmacology of epilepsy, psychiatric aspects of epilepsy, and surgical treatment of treatment-resistant focal epilepsy. He is the past editor-in-chief of Epilepsy Currents, the official journal of the American Epilepsy Society. He has served as co-chair of the Neuropsychobiology Commission of the International League Against Epilepsy and as chair of the Epilepsy Section of the American Academy of Neurology. He also has chaired and has been a member of several committees of the American Epilepsy Society and American Academy of Neurology.

Dr Jay Salpekar

Dr. Jay Salpekar is the director of the Neuropsychiatry in Epilepsy Program at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, and is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at Johns Hopkins University Medical School. He received Bachelor's and Medical degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and continued at Barnes Hospital for general psychiatry and then did a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the Yale University Child Study Center. He has been an academician overlapping psychiatry and neurology for over 25 years.

Dr. Salpekar has distinguished fellow status in the American Epilepsy Society, the American Neuropsychiatric Association and in the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The American Epilepsy Society recently honored him with the Rebecca Goldman Kaufman Award for Ethical Neuropsychiatry. He serves on the editorial boards for several journals including Epilepsy and Behavior, Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, Epilepsy Currents, and the British Journal of Psychiatry--open. He is a long time principal investigator for clinical research projects involving psychiatric illness associated with epilepsy, and is widely published on how neuropsychiatric paradigms apply to pediatrics. He recently co-edited a textbook, Pediatric Neuropsychiatry: A Case Based Approach, which emphasized those themes. Current projects highlight the overlap of anxiety with epilepsy and explore novel treatments that may address both conditions simultaneously.

Professor Masud Husain

Professor Masud Husain is Professor of Neurology & Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Oxford. He leads the Neurological Conditions theme of the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and is Editor-in-Chief of Brain. Together with Cornelia van Duijn, he leads Dementia Research Oxford.

In 2013, he was awarded a Principal Fellowship by The Wellcome Trust and moved to Oxford where he is a Professorial Fellow at New College. Previously he was Professor of Clinical Neurology at UCL & The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, London and Deputy Director of the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience.

Masud read Physiological Sciences / Medicine (1981-84) at Oxford before completing his PhD here in 1987. He held a Harkness Fellowship and was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT, prior to returning to Oxford to finish his clinical degree. After Neurology training in London, he held a joint appointment as Consultant Neurologist and Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow (2000-12), first at Imperial College, then at UCL.

Dr Marian Galovic

Dr Marian Galovic is Head of the Epilepsy Unit at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. His research focuses on neuroimaging and prognostic models in epilepsy. He is the Past-Chair of the ILAE Young Epilepsy Section.

Dr Alice Lam

Dr. Alice Lam is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. After receiving her MD/PhD from the University of Michigan, she completed her residency training in neurology at Partners Neurology (combined Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital). She then completed fellowship training in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She is currently a faculty member in the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

As a physician, Dr. Lam takes care of patients in both the subspecialty Epilepsy Clinic as well as the Memory Disorders Unit. Her clinical and translational research program explores the interface between epilepsy, the neurodegenerative diseases, and cognition, using a combination of neurophysiology, signal processing, machine learning, neuroimaging, and cognitive outcomes. Her research additionally leverages neurophysiologic data collected from patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Lam is a recipient of the American Academy of Neurology Susan S. Spencer Award, the American Epilepsy Society Young Investigator Award, and the Massachusetts General Hospital Anne Klibanski Visiting Scholars Award.
